Mahjong Sakura Garden is a Mahjong tile-matching game with a Japanese theme. Across 12 levels, the player must clear away layered tiles displayed in patterns commonly seen in online Chinese Mahjong games. Although many of the tiles also feature Chinese Mahjong icons, including classic bamboo, characters, and stones, the flowers and seasons have distinctive Japanese artwork and elements. Additionally, the "sakura" (i.e., Japanese cherry blossoms) in the game's title appear along the edges of the play area.
The patterns have uncovered top layers and covered lower ones. The player can only remove pairs of uncovered identical tiles or pieces that come from the same flowers or seasons category. Usable tiles have a left or right side open edge. The game helps the player recognize a usable tile by highlighting it with green after selection. Otherwise, the game shakes unusable tiles and bad matches.
Mahjong Sakura Garden aids the player by providing them with several critical tools on a horizontal bar below the pattern. They can review the number of current pairs at any given time. They can also find a matching pair with a magnifier hint tool and shuffle all remaining tiles with a double arrows shuffle tool. For example, when the player uses the hint tool, the game turns a matching pair purple and makes the highlighting flash repeatedly.
